Certificate

The Center for North American Studies offers the possibility to prepare for professional activities with reference to North America. Students can participate in a wide range of collaborating subjects and departments at Kiel University which deal with the US, Canada and the relations of these countries with Europe and Germany.

Program requirements

All students of traditional study programs who have passed 7 semesters of their regular studies as well as post-graduates of study programs at Kiel University are entitled to take part in the program. In order to receive the certificate, students need sufficient communicative skills and an adequate knowledge of the English and French or Spanish language in order to participate in courses which are held in foreign languages.

Program

The additional study program of the ZNAS includes  seminars and lectures on North American topics which cover in total 16 hours per week in the semester, i.e. usually 8 seminars or lecture series which can be taken in several semesters. 4 seminars or lecture series of the 8 (amongst these 4 at least two graduate seminars) have to be completed by writing an examination or a term paper (left to the lecturer's discretion) in order to get a "Leistungsschein". Undergraduate seminars  are not sufficient. Students willing to receive the certificate can only get credits for one single seminar that belongs to the work load of their regular study program if it can be related to North American issues. The workload of participants of a North America field trip will be reduced: They have to enroll for courses which cover in total 14 hours per week in the semester.

The Center for North American Studies additionally organizes special events such as readings, further courses, interdisciplinary symposia or field trips.
